How I Shoot in Nightclubs — Gear, Tips, and What They Don't Teach You

Shooting in nightclubs is its own art form. The light is bad, people are moving, and moments only last a second.

Gear

Canon EOS R is the body I trust.

Lenses:

• 24–70mm f/2.8 — the workhorse. Zoom gives you flexibility in tight spaces.

• 16mm f/2.8 — when the space is small and the atmosphere is big.

• 50mm f/1.8 — more atmospheric shots in natural light.

Godox flash — I wouldn't shoot without it. Bouncing flash off the ceiling or wall softens light completely differently than direct flash.

Technical Tips

• Bounce first, direct flash only when necessary.

• Don't be afraid to push ISO. ISO 3200–6400 on the Canon R is perfectly usable.

• Shutter speed 1/100–1/200. It freezes motion.

• Read the room before you start shooting.

• Always shoot RAW. In nightclub photos, white balance is all over the place.

Protecting Your Gear

• Lens hood — protects the glass from bumps.

• Strap or hand grip — keeps the camera secured.

• Situational awareness — always know who's behind you.

How to Approach People

Read the person before you raise the camera. Body language tells you everything.

Don't be afraid of rejection. It's part of the job.

Remember to enjoy the night yourself. When you're relaxed, people sense it. Suddenly you're not a photographer — you're one of the partygoers.
